Best Times of Year to Hike the Zion Narrows

Overview of Seasonal Considerations for Hiking the Zion Narrows

Hiking the Zion Narrows is an unforgettable experience, drawing you into immersive sandstone canyons with awe-inspiring walls. Depending on the time of year you visit, the Zion Narrows can provide a variety of conditions. Understanding seasonal weather, water conditions, crowds, and gear requirements is key to a safe and enjoyable hike. With the right preparation and equipment, you can experience the Narrows year-round.

Spring (March-April) in the Zion Narrows

Spring is a popular time to visit Zion, particularly for spring break, and for good reason. The region warms back up, the higher elevations thaw out, and the National Park presents ample opportunities for adventure. Conditions are typically pleasant, with cold mornings and moderate to warm afternoons. Spring storms are common and can be unpredictable, so it’s important to be aware of any potential precipitation and heed any flash flood warnings. There are occasional days that are much colder or hotter than average, so checking weather forecasts is key for preparation. Carefully selecting your hikes and your clothing layers will help you have the most comfortable experience.

Spring can sometimes bring higher water levels in the Virgin River Narrows as snow from higher elevations melts and drains into the park. The Narrows can be closed for periods of time when the river surges with snowmelt. Some sections of the Narrows hold water longer than others depending on the season, especially one of the first deep water spots you’ll encounter near Mystery Falls. The average water temperature in spring is cold, around 41° to 53° F (5° to 12° C).

We suggest renting the Dry Bib Package for Narrows (Bottom-Up). The Dry Bib has an integrated neoprene sock that creates a waterproof envelope from your feet to your armpits. You stay 95% dry, only getting moisture from your sweat and some condensation that collects in the suit due to your body being warm and the water being cold. Wear leggings or quick dry layers under the bibs, and on especially cold days you may want to wear thermal layers underneath.

For colder, longer hiking days in the Narrows (Top-Down) with deeper water levels, we recommend renting the Dry Suit Package. The Dry Suit provides more coverage, and will keep you warmer and drier in deep cold water sections of the Narrows hike, so you can focus on enjoying the amazing terrain and views.

Summer (May-September) in the Zion Narrows

Summer brings hot temperatures to the desert and lots of people exploring the park, especially on holiday weekends! As snowmelt subsides with the end of spring, the Narrows water levels and temperatures tend to become more mild. Mornings are still cool, but average daytime temperatures are often over 100°F (38°C). With the heat, pack lots of drinking water, bring ample sun protection, and get an early start.

Skip the shuttle lines and ride e-bikes to the Narrows trailhead

For most of the summer and with the right preparation, the Narrows offers a pleasant hiking adventure thanks to the refreshing water in the river channel. The average water temperature in the Narrows in summer is cool, around 56° to 68° F (13° to 20° C), which feels very pleasant on hot days! It’s still important to watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, especially on the Riverside Walk. This first and last mile of the Narrows hike is outside the river and receives much less shade than the canyon itself, so it can feel surprisingly hot, especially during the summer.

In terms of safety, the monsoon season (roughly July to September) can bring epic storms with lots of rain, which can cause a flash flood in canyons such as the Narrows. Make sure to check forecasts and warnings to stay safe, and consider backup options in case the Narrows is closed.

For most visitors hiking in May, our shoulder month, we recommend the Dry Bib Package. Early mornings in the Narrows can be chilly, and the extra protection helps keep you warm and comfortable. If you're planning an afternoon hike on a particularly warm day, the Footwear Package is often all you need.

For the majority of summer (June to August), when the weather is hotter than expected, we recommend the Summer Footwear Package. Zion Guru's custom-designed boots, crafted in Italy with high-performance Vibram® rubber soles, provide the traction and durability needed for hiking the Narrows. Vibram is widely recognized for its exceptional grip on wet, uneven terrain, making it an excellent choice for river hiking. Pair these boots with the neoprene socks (wetsuit socks) and a hiking pole, and you’ll be set up for success to have fun in the Narrows during warmer months.

Fall (October-November) in the Zion Narrows

Autumn provides cool temperatures in Zion.

This can be a magical time of year to visit the park and hike the Narrows, with beautiful changing leaves, crisp bluebird days.

The daytime temperatures can vary dramatically, so bringing lots of layer options and checking the weather is helpful to accommodate whatever the desert brings. Mornings are often cold, but by afternoon it can be moderate and lovely, or even quite warm! As the days get shorter, many people forget about the earlier sunset, so bringing a headlamp is a smart safety measure.

In the Virgin River Narrows, the average water temperature during the fall is 41° to 53° F (5° to 12° C). Especially on a cold morning, that can feel quite frigid if you are unprepared, or totally reasonable if you have the right gear.

In October and November, we recommend the Dry Bib or Footwear Package to keep you warm in the relatively shallow but cold water of the Narrows. If the water happens to be higher than normal for fall, or you are planning to hike the Narrows Top-Down, we may suggest the Dry Suit Package for additional coverage and warmth.

Winter (December-February) in the Zion Narrows

With the right gear, the Narrows is an incredible winter hike. Many visitors actually prefer this season because cooler temperatures and fewer crowds create a quieter, more immersive experience in the canyon. If you're hiking the Bottom Up Narrows, we recommend our Dry Bib Package. For the Top Down Narrows, the Dry Suit Package provides the highest level of protection during a long day in the river. Pair either option with warm, moisture-wicking base layers to stay comfortable from start to finish.

From December to February, Zion chills out — literally and figuratively. Relatively few people visit the park in the winter. It’s a unique time of year, the shuttle buses stop operating and you are actually able to drive into the main canyon and park at the trailhead. The weather is cold and sometimes wet. Nighttime temperatures are often below freezing, and daytime highs can vary between 46° to 60° F (7° to 15° C).

Higher elevations in the park get plentiful snow, but in the town of Springdale and bottom of the main canyon, snow is more rare, and usually doesn’t stick around for long. Snow can give the landscape an amazing contrast and special aesthetic, giving visitors a unique, memorable experience. It also can make conditions quite slippery, so be cautious. Consider renting micro-spikes from Zion Guru for your boots to improve your traction on ice and snow.

The Narrows is a deep canyon with limited sunlight, which means it stays extra cold in the winter season. The average water temperature is very cold: 38° to 45° F (3° to 7° C). There is often ice in the water and in the canyon, so hikers should be aware of the hazard of falling ice, as well as the real danger of hypothermia.
