Lead Guide/Canyoneering/Scenic Hiking/Multi-Day (He/Him/His)

I grew up on an offgrid homestead in Iowa, and fostered a love of nature by wandering through the woods and rivers near my home. I discovered mountaineering when my middle school English teacher recommended “Into Thin Air” and quickly devoured every book I could find on the subject, dreaming of big adventures in far away places while growing up in a state with very little topographic variation. I went to the University of Iowa where I studied Science Education. It was here that I was introduced to both climbing and whitewater kayaking while working for the University's outdoor program Touch The Earth. After graduating I immediately moved to Colorado, to be closer to the mountains and other wild places, and have never looked back. Adventure and outdoor recreation have, in many ways, defined the path of my life; they’re where I find meaning, solace, and empowerment.

This is my 6th year guiding here in the Zion Area and 12th year in the outdoor recreation industry. Professionally I’m certified as a Level II Pro Canyon Guide through Canyon Guides International and as Swift Water Rescue Technician and Wilderness First Responder.

As a guide I’m passionate about education, for everyone from beginners to advanced users, and facilitating meaningful experiences. The outdoors have been a great crucible for personal growth and development and I enjoy passing that passion onto others, by helping along your own personal journey. I try to create space on my trips for reflection and being present in the moment. I particularly love technical sports, as they allow us to come face to face with our personal relationship with fear and to challenge the artificial limits we place upon ourselves and our own potential.

When it comes to my own adventures, I’m extremely passionate about canyoning, whitewater boating, and mountaineering but dabble in many outdoor sports. I absolutely love exploring the hidden worlds found in a canyon environment and it’s where I focus the majority of my personal time and energy. I’ve descended 100’s of canyons all over the United States, Canada, and Central America. With a number of exploratory and first descents here in the desert Southwest. I also volunteer many hours every year replacing worn and outdated anchor bolts in canyons. Rivers are my other love. I’ve paddled many classic whitewater rivers across the Western United States and Central America; there’s no bad day on the water and I’m equally at home in packraft, oar rig, or kayak. My first love in the outdoors was fast and light alpine mountaineering, and while I don’t make it into the mountains as often these days it’s still something I love deeply.

Currently the Grand Canyon is my favorite adventure destination with its massive potential for long multi-sport adventures combining packrafting, backpacking, and canyoning. When I’m not adventuring I enjoy reading and building things.
